April 1, 2012:

I dislike the word "diva," and by using the term so much we make it meaningless. Nevertheless, "diva" is a brief word, it rolls off the tongue more easily than "female singer" and it sounds less archaic and pedestal-putting than "songstress."

As I approach the half-way point of the Top 100 21st Century Southern Soul Countdown (this month's new Artist Guides include L. J. Echols, LaMorris Williams and Sweet Angel) I begin to realize how many divas (not to mention male singers) will not make the chart.

With no little satisfaction your Daddy B. Nice has now made amends to over fifty up-and-coming artists whom I'd never had time to feature in long-overdue Artist Guides.

However, the remaining fifty spots on the chart will be dominated by "regulars" from the old Top 100 chart (those who haven't declined or died) effectively closing the window on the many artists still on the outside looking in.

I was cogitating on all this the other day, chin in palm, elbow on knee in a pose like The Thinker when someone mistook me for "Tebow-ing."

So in the interest of "good works" I decided to devote one of the upcoming Artist Guides to all the overlooked Southern Soul divas, listing their names and signature tunes, giving them some much-needed exposure.

I'll also revolve the top song each month so that a different artist (from the list below) is featured. There'll be more here about that later.

Women face enormous obstacles in building professional music careers. Men are more genetically wired for the relentless, game-playing obsessiveness that a career as a performing artist demands, and men are less likely to let go of such careers, perhaps even when they should.

Female artists, on the other hand, come and go--many with just an album or two--before they return to more pressing concerns in real life. On top of that, there are numerous social, business and gender hurdles that still impede women.

Southern Soul is a male-dominated business. Male artists make more albums, and thus they take the lion's share of the spotlight. Even when a female artist hits it big with a single or two, it's next to impossible to keep repeating the success with sufficient regularity to create a lasting brand.

So here are some of the worthy female Southern Soul divas who deserve more exposure, if only space permitted. Many were very close to being included in Top 100 21st Century Southern Soul Countdown, and I remind those performers that the chart is fluid, and that they can bust their way into the new chart in the same way performers like Nellie "Tiger" Travis and Karen Wolfe muscled their way onto the old chart.

The list looks short, but there are thirty-nine people on it, and I could easily add another tier of thirty-nine female performers if I combed through the Comprehensive Index.

All The Overlooked Divas....

Adrena "Cheating On The Back Streets"

Angel Sent "Sugar Daddy"

April "Funk Dhat"
