Daddy B. Nice's Profile

I've been aware of Till 1 ever since his magical "Ohhh Baby" appeared, but he's remained an outlier in southern soul, recording only a few singles and never publishing an album. There was a Till 1 mixtape/album distributed on iTunes and other outlets in the mid-teens but it's no longer available. Then, last year (2022), a newcomer named Ciddy Boi P came on the scene with "Can I Get It?" I still never tire of listening to it. Great groove, great rhythm track, refreshingly rough in the southern soul way, yet supple, melodic, even uplifting. But what puts the song over the top is its passionate vocals, and Till 1 (along with Mississippi Humminboy) is one of the two guest vocalists, the one with the angelic (albeit powerful)-sounding voice in the slightly higher register, the singer of the middle verse and the contributor on the choruses. "Can I Get It?" went on to win southern soul's Best Collaboration of 2022.

"Ohhh Baby" is even more dazzling. With its warm, cajun-accented hook, rocking-chair tempo and becoming vocal, the success of "Ohhh Baby" in 2015 both drew southern soul fans to Till 1 while simultaneously drawing Till 1 into the southern soul genre. But it soon became evident that Till 1 brought something extra and unique to the table: his jaw-dropping, WWE-style physique, which Till unashamedly displayed in promotional visuals and concerts.

See Till 1 performing live and shirtless in Shreveport, Mississippi.

The result was a little mixed. Some fans, argubly in the minority, were turned off by the blatant commercialization. Some even questioned Till 1's musical seriousness. But others were fascinated, especially the admiring women straining to stroke his naked, washboard-like chest in live performances, drawn both by his musical prowess and his sex appeal. And as the singles slowly but steadily accrued, Till 1 embraced the sexual aspect of his brand under the marketing title the "Heart Throb".

2023 finds Till 1 in a surprisingly positive position, ranked just outside the first tier of performers in southern soul. His songs have routinely received hundreds of thousands of YouTube views, with a couple surpassing the million mark. He's also found an identity and brand with which he's comfortable and needs only to collect his major tunes in a bonafide southern soul debut album to gain more attention and legitimacy.

About Till 1 #30 The New Generation Southern Soul

Shreveport, Louisiana-based Till 1 began his career in the early teens singing mainstream R&B. He broke into the southern soul market in 2015 with his single "Ohhh Baby," charting at #3 in December under the title "Ohhh Baby (She Got Them Tight Jeans On)".

"Can I Be" dropped in March the following year, with the single "Blow Me A Kiss" following in September of 2016. "Blow Me A Kiss" charted in December with Daddy B. Nice commenting,

We know one thing: Till 1 hasn't been monitoring the discussions here about cheesy horn programming. But there's so much else to like, including the vocal and the organ/keyboard--and anyway, the song is already a hit in Mobile and Pensacola.

"Blow Me A Kiss" was also a finalist for Best Mid-Tempo Song of 2016.

"Hitcha Wit Dat Tool" charted at #3 in February 2019 with Daddy B. Nice finally voicing some reservations about Till's marketing:

Is Till 1 a recording artist or a body builder? Hard to tell sometimes; he sure likes to display that naked chest. And like Coldrank, his catalog too often reverts to urban-styled vocals, but "Hitcha Wit Da Tool" is his best southern soul song since "Oooh Baby" and a treat to listen to.

"Kau-ute," Till's first post-pandemic single, was a successful project. The song title was a novel way of saying "coyote," slang for a sexually-aggressive older woman. The tune was produced by Ciddy Boi P (see profile above) in 2022, the same year the pair teamed up on Ciddy Boi's "Can I Get It?".

"Rulezzz" came out in 2023, and it too found a respectable number of fans.
